The Killers 'Read My Mind'
Friday, 11 May 2007

This is the latest single to be released off The Killer's second album, Sam's Town.  It was filmed in Japan and features various oddities including a giant plush monster that follows the band around Tokyo.  This is a mellower song for the band but if you're a fan of The Killer's,  then you'll love every song on this excellent second album.

The Nanny Diaries - Trailer
Thursday, 10 May 2007

The Nanny Diaries certainly looks like lighweight entertainment but with Scarlett Johansson headining, I'm sure it will appeal to a pretty wide audience and no doubt make some good box office returns.  Laura Linney also stars and makes an excellent 'Age Appropriate Character Delivery Device'

Best Robot Dance
Thursday, 10 May 2007

This is a classic YouTube video that you might have seen before. It's now a couple of years old and at the time of posting it has been viewed 7,344,467 times. The first two dancers are pretty good but then the third contestant takes the stage you get to see what someone can do with the right body type and flexibility.

Clone Trooper Orchestra
Thursday, 10 May 2007

This is the sort of animation that usually appears on an animator's showreel somewhere. It's cute and shows a lot of talent for animation but somewhere along the line the idea of a compelling narrative was lost. I do like it though, because it must be extrememly difficult to somehow create Darth Vader as a cute, stumpy maestro of an orchestra.

Stardust - Trailer
Wednesday, 09 May 2007

I first heard about Stardust from a friend and he thought it would end up being a classic for this generation of young people much like A Princess Bride is an enduring classic for those of us in our early thirties. I was skeptical when I had only heard the premise but now that I've seen the full trailer I have to say that I'm agreeing with him. It seems to have that whimsical element and the light heartedness of not taking itself too seriously.

Baby Got Back - Gilbert and Sullivan Style
Wednesday, 09 May 2007

'Baby Got Back' is just so over the top as a song that everyone seems to want to do their own parody version. This is for all those readers with a love of musical theatre. Another very good version is done by Jonathon Coulton here.   I can't wait for the Andrew Lloyd Weber version or the classical operatic version of this song to pop up on YouTube. You may think I'm kidding but you just wait, the Internet is a mysterious place.

Thanks go to Crumpet for the source.

Chanel No.5 - The Film
Tuesday, 08 May 2007

This mega commercial for Chanel No.5 was directed by Baz Luhrman and stars Nicole Kidman and Rodrigo Santoro. While everyone knows Kidman, it may interest you to know that Rodrigo became almost unrecognizable recently when he played King Xerxes in the big screen Sparta-fest, 300. He also had a small supporting role as one of the crash survivors in the television hit, LOST.

Fiery Rube Goldberg Device
Tuesday, 08 May 2007

I always like to see a good Rube Goldberg device and this one has lots of fire, so that's definitely a bonus in my book. This is an excerpt from the film The Way Things Go , which has this concept extended out to 30 minutes straight. I like fire and chain reactions but I'm not sure I could sit through half an hour of this.

Pirates of the Caribbean : At World's End - Featurette
Monday, 07 May 2007

With the imminent release of Pirates of the Caribbean : At World's End here's a taster of what's instore.  I have to say that I liked the first one but was disappointed by the second.  It seems to me that the need to one-up the size and scope of the production everytime has all but extinguished the storytelling aspect of the films.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Truck Chase
Monday, 07 May 2007

This is the legendary truck chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark . It has all the elements of the classic adventure without a single instance of CGI or computer manipulation. With Indiana Jones 4 starting production this year , let's hope they don't get carried away with what's now possible with computer graphics and forget how to tell an adventure story.

And for those of you who have been living under a rock for the last twenty plus years, here's the trailer for the 20th Anniversary edition of Raiders of the Lost Ark that came out in 2001.  Even though it came out in 1981, it still holds together today as one of the best of it's genre by far.
